Am I a Candidate for LASIK Eye Surgery?

Want to know if you are a good candidate for laser eye surgery? Your chances are good, since approximately 95% of the population is eligible for LASIK. Some people, however, should not undergo the procedure.

Do any of the following describe you? If so, you may be a good candidate for LASIK.

  • You are over age 18.
  • You currently wear glasses or contact lenses for nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism.
  • You would like to be able to wear prescription lenses less often or not at all.
  • You understand the risk involved with laser eye surgery.
  • You are in good overall health.
  • Your lens prescription has not changed in the past year.
  • You have reasonable expectations about the impact LASIK will have on your sight and life.

Even if you meet all of the above criteria, you should not have LASIK if any of the following apply to you:

  • You are pregnant or nursing.
  • You have had an eye injury, eye infection, or eye disease in the last year.
  • You are not willing to accept the risks involved with LASIK.
  • You suffer from dry eye.

There are also two other characteristics that may make you a poor candidate for LASIK, but you will not know if they apply to you unless you see an ophthalmologist for a comprehensive eye test. First, you may be disqualified if your cornea is too thin. Because LASIK involves cutting and peeling back a flap of corneal tissue, your cornea must be thick enough to make this safe. Second, you may not be able to have LASIK if your pupils dilate beyond a certain diameter in the dark. People with large pupils are at a higher risk of postoperative complications such as halos, glare, and problems with night vision.

The best way to determine whether or not you are a good candidate for LASIK is to contact one of Los Angeles’s top refractive surgeons. Find one through www.LASIKdocshop.com
