Vision
Correction Procedures
LASIK
is not the only form of eye surgery.
Los
Angeles is home to a host of talented
refractive
surgeons who provide various eye
surgeries. If you think vision correction
surgery is in your future, see a qualified
eye doctor to learn which procedure
is right for you!
PRK
Photorefractive Keratectomy, or PRK,
was the first laser eye surgery. It
is still used for patients with low
to moderate nearsightedness. Like
LASIK, PRK can free patients from
the need to wear glasses or contact
lenses. However, PRK does carry some
risks. The best way to know if PRK
is right for you is to visit your
eye care professional. Ask lots of
questions and be sure that you understand
what you can expect from the procedure
before you decide to undergo surgery.

ALK
Automated Lamellar Keratoplasty, or
ALK, is a non-laser procedure that
can be used to treat patients with
farsightedness or extreme nearsightedness.
Like LASIK, ALK begins with the creation
of a corneal flap. In ALK, however,
the surgeon then uses the microkeratome,
rather than the laser, to remove corneal
tissue from beneath the flap.

LTK
Laser thermal keratoplasty, or LTK,
is a type of laser eye surgery specifically
used to treat farsightedness. In LTK,
the ophthalmologist uses the laser
to make a series of tiny holes around
the periphery of the cornea. The cornea
expands and becomes more steeply curved
as a result. This helps to correct
the refractive error. LTK is used
exclusively on patients over the age
of 40.

RK
and AK
Radial Keratotomy and Astigmatic Keratotomy
are two older procedures that have
been used to treat nearsightedness
and astigmatism, respectively. Both
surgeries use a series of incisions
to reshape the cornea and improve
vision. One of the primary differences
in the way the surgeries are performed
lies in the shape of the incisions.
RK makes radial cuts while AK uses
two curved incisions.
